Imagine -> Design -> Create Workshop #2

Imagine -> Design -> Create strives to introduce girls in grades 9-12 to pre-engineering concepts through fun interactive projects.

Participants will use drafting and design techniques to develop a cell phone accessory and print it on the 3-D printer at CCC. The third day of the workshop includes a field trip to a local design firm.

CTE Proposed Legislation for 2007

CTE Teachers Needed!

We are in the process of proposing legislation for the 2007 Oregon Legislature. We will count on you to contact your local lawmakers to support the proposal to make sure lawmakers have an opportunity to review the importance of CTE in Oregon. Our proposal asks for funding to support an in-depth study of the numerous best practices in Oregon and around the nation, hopefully leading to additional funding and support for all of our programs and students.

Additional information will soon be coming your way via this blog. It is a great time to ask for the needed dollars to expand and support our programs. Washington state lawmakers have done it. California lawmakers did it. Now Oregon lawmakers will get the same opportunity to put the money where we can prove there is a positive return.

Clackamas County Business Summit

Over 150 local residents, educators, business, and elected officials will gather Wednesday afternoon for the 2006 Clackamas County Business Summit. Education is one of the items of discussion during the afternoon review. The group is expected to help develop recommendations for business success in our County for the coming year.

A group of CTE teachers are attending and will be focusing on the need for students to experience rigor and relevance through CTE classes in Clackamas County. The specific priorities, strategic partners, and goals will include discussion on our various classes in Clackamas County and the direct connection with economic development.

We will update you on the final report from the summit as it becomes available.

Metsger Proposes Block Grants for Vocational and Technical Education

Program Preserves Local Control while Increasing Accountability

SALEM - After hearing from teachers, community college professors, business leaders, and constituents, Sen. Rick Metsger (D-Mt. Hood) has asked the Senate Commission on Educational Excellence to add "vocational and technical education" to the list of programs that would be eligible for funding through the commission's proposed Accountability Block Grant program.

In a letter sent to commission members earlier today, Metsger explained that inadequate funding of vocational and technical education has led to a situation where "too many employers are having difficulty finding workers who have the necessary training for good-paying trade and manufacturing jobs."

The commission's Accountability Block Grant proposal would allow school districts to prioritize funding for programs that best fit their community and would require districts to meet performance standards for the programs they choose to fund.

"Programs that train students for skilled jobs in our communities should be eligible for these valuable grants, and they should be held to a high standard," said Metsger. "If we are serious about preparing all our students for the future, we cannot afford to overlook the need for first-rate vocational and technical education."

SB 364/Workforce 2005 Taskforce

This is an UNOFFICIAL synopsis of the work of the taskforce which began in early 2006 and finished work at the end of July. The taskforce still must vote on the recommendations but these are the meeting notes at the last session.

Funding: There was not enough time or resources to complete an analysis of Oregon funding for PTE. The group thought it would be best to continue research to make a vetter recommenation. What outcomes should be seen, what are the best practices, and what is Oregon's return on the investment for current funding and the need for more funding.

2+2: The committee believes that addressing issues of alignment systemically are about consistency among community colleges and high schools. There is an obstacle to consistency including the lack of transferability of dual credit courses into four-year degree programs. There should also be clear communication about the resource for all stakeholders.

Student Leadership Organizations: The task force memers agreed business and industry partnerships should support the state's leadership center. There should be a variety of leadership organizations, not just those currently involved in the state's student leadership center.

Access: Access could be improved by more directly connecting businesses and schools. If a clearinghouse can be etablished then businesses and schools could find each other. The Business Education Compact and Oregon Workforce Initiative Board and others should participate.

Distance Learning Opportunities: The Oregon Virtual Network should include courses in high-demand Health Occupations. Modules or courses can be added to the network.

Teacher Education and Teacher Endorsements: To increase the number of teachers qualified to teach CTE courses, scholarship money should pay for credit bearing courses that are needed. Administrators should be given additional knowledge on CTE for better supervision and support. A more thorough analysis should be studied with TSPC.

Welcome to our own blog for CTE in Clackamas County. This blog came about after a C-TEC retreat meeting on August 22nd. We need a place to share information, perhaps some lesson plans, ideas about CTE in Oregon and legislative issues. I am hosting this site because I believe we are the future of education for all Oregon students and we need a chance to connect.

Special thanks to Scott Giltz and Megan Helzerman for giving us a voice. I will include links to the state and the OACTE as well as others. I hope folks will contribute information, share ideas and keep this operational.
